Lapas Secondchance: Empowerment Through Waste Management Education

Waste has value. And it's beyond economical value.

When managed properly, it can become a source of income, knowledge, and empowerment for a better livelihood ♻️

A Meaningful Partnership

Together with the Second Chance Foundation and Lembaga Permasyaratan (Lapas) Kelas I Cipinang and Indonesia Chamber of Commerce (Kadin), Sirsak conducted a waste management education program for inmates and Lapas Committees, coinciding with World Food Day 2025.

The initiative centered on understanding and managing low-value waste, such as multi-layer plastics (MLP). MLP, often in the form of our everyday products like coffee sachet or oil pouch, is one of the most challenging materials to recycle. While often overlooked, these materials represent a significant portion of waste that ends up in landfills or the environment. Through the program, inmates and Lapas Committees learned how to recognize, sort, and manage different waste types, especially low-value plastics, using interactive and engaging learning methods.

"Everything deserves a second chance, including the waste that we have–that's also the principle of a circular economy, giving a new life to the resources that we have instead of dumping it straight away," mentioned Angeline Callista, CEO & Co-founder of Sirsak.

Creating Community Leaders

By combining hands-on learning and awareness-raising activities, we hope this initiative will inspire new community leaders among the participants to take an active role in supporting sustainable waste management both within and beyond the facility.

"When managed properly, waste can become a source of livelihood. The same goes for people. Anyone can regain their value when they choose to grow, improve, and give back to the environment and those around them," said Evy Amir Syamsudin, Founder of the Second Chance Foundation.

Social and Environmental Impact

Beyond education, the activity symbolized how collaboration between businesses, institutions, and communities can create real social and environmental impact.

We're deeply grateful for this meaningful partnership with Second Chance Foundation and Lapas Kelas I Cipinang. Thank you for standing with us on how sustainable changes can happen when we empower people with knowledge and opportunity 🌱
